Mélanie Pilon, Photographer
Born in Terrasse-Vaudreuil, a typically little village of Montreal suburbia (something out of your worst nightmare when you plan on having a big life), I grew up in a not-so-easy family environment, where I had to use my imagination for every game, every moment and aspect of my youth; dull moments were filled with day dreaming, imagining and creating my own fun. Even as early as kindergarten, my teacher just knew I was going to be an artist. It took me almost 30 years to find my art; photography.
While moving between music, drawing and painting, I've had to deal with personal issues that brought reality too quickly to my eyes. I managed to understand life in my own way but to actually balance my imagination and my sense of reality. What I've found is that photography is a representation of a world based in reality where imagination creates the beauty of the subject.
With my background in fashion design, I've come to appreciate body language, attitude but mostly the different ways someone can express their own reality. Although I specialize in concert photography, I also have a larger array of photo talents at my disposal. But in all, I try to capture life in all its aspects.
My true desire for my body of work is to show that passion is still alive, that perfection is superficial, and that beauty is not just in the physical aspect of this perfection but in its charm as well. My desire is to show the whole world a way out of stereotypes, so that they can sample and taste difference, which is not something to be feared but appreciated. Photography seems to me the best medium to express this difference; all of what you see is real in its three dimensions, be it objects or people that you print on paper, but its presentation is what I hope will fire your imagination, as it does mine.
My philosophy is based in this difference and in its respect. It is difference that inspires my work and I find myself humbled by it everytime I capture anything on camera.
